Museum Walk: Museo delle Cività

During our Stay Local Weekend at Temple University Rome, we were encouraged to stay in Rome and discover more of the city, rather than traveling elsewhere. The school organized many events for students, including the museum walk at Museo delle Cività, which is located in a part of the city that I had never been to before, called EUR. This district was very different from the city center. The buildings were more modern, and it actually reminded me a bit of Center City Philadelphia. While I was walking through the streets, I noticed how open and organized the area felt compared to the very crowded historic center, which made me realize how diverse different areas of Rome are. The inside of the museum had a similar style, with many art displays and models showcasing Roman history. There were many different exhibits, but we mainly focused on Italy’s colonial history in Africa at the Museum of Opacity. Being part of experiences like these has made my time studying abroad feel even more meaningful, as I feel a deeper connection to the city and its history. This museum walk reminded me of the importance of this study abroad experience in broadening my perspectives and understanding of the world.

Our guide Lorenzo helped make this such an authentic experience. He walked us through the different displays in the Museum of Opacity and spoke honestly about real stories, power, and the parts of Italian history that aren’t always openly discussed. He also connected ancient Rome to modern Italy, especially when he talked about today’s protests and strikes. It made me realize how much the past shapes what’s happening now, and how important it is to understand the history behind the country you are in.

I found this experience very enjoyable and informational. As someone exploring my own cultural identity in Rome, it felt especially important to see how Italy confronts its past. I found it very interesting to learn about the connections between history and present day activism, which made me reflect on how cultures evolve and learn from their own stories.

If experiences like this one interest you, consider studying abroad! Temple University Rome offers many opportunities and excursions that allow you to explore the city, connect with the culture, and understand the history of the city.
