Gilman scholar reflection: Susan Zheng on studying abroad as a STEM student

As a first-generation STEM student, I never thought I had the finances or time to even go abroad. Yet sitting in Dr. Gianfranco Bellipanni’s Biochemistry course, I learned of the Art Conservation using Biotechnology program in Sicily, and the idea of studying abroad was planted in my head. My advisor, Dr. Gorka, introduced me to the Gilman Scholarship opportunity, and I decided to apply. I am writing to share my experiences throughout the process and, hopefully it serves as a guide and insight to any student who yearns to experience a different culture, language, and customs.

Picking a program

I chose the biotechnology program, focused on historical conservation of art, based on my interest in history, art, and sciences. My love of Mediterranean mythologies perfectly aligns with the location of the program.

Three tips:

  1. Write down all of your interests and goals and see if the program checks most of your boxes.
  2. Check with your advisors and see how the program will affect your education and career trajectory.
  3. Estimate the cost and check your finances.

On scholarships

Since we mention finances, we need to discuss scholarships. I received both Temple’s Study Abroad and Gilman scholarships. The best way to find scholarships is through your school websites, where there will be a list of internal scholarships and external scholarships. You have a higher chance of receiving the internal scholarship because the applicant pool is smaller compared to external scholarships.

The Gilman scholarship

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program helps students with limited finances to study abroad where students will gain foreign language fluency, cultural understanding, and personal skills.

The Gilman is a highly competitive national scholarship, I recommend you have at least a month to apply and request for a letter of recommendation. Three major essays are critical to the application, which demonstrate your purpose, interest in a foreign language or culture, community impact, and follow-up service project proposal. I had multiple advisors look over my essays and the key to success is to stay sincere and show your excitement. Gilman also offers additional scholarships such as the STEM Supplemental Award, Critical Need Language Award, and Gilman-McCain Scholarship that students should look into. In general, Gilman offered additional support and resources that provided me with guidance throughout the program. During the process, from pre-departure to overseas and returning back to the US, there are required tasks and document uploads that will be checked by Gilman advisors which ensures student safety.

5 top tasks to do before departure:

  1. Ensure you have all required documentation on hand.
  2. Plan your transportation for the whole trip.
  3. Exchange foreign currency and purchase a SIM card before arrival.
  4. Ensure you know the local emergency number and who to contact.
  5. Research your destination and pack accordingly.

My experiences and visits abroad:

The program is hosted by the University of Palermo and takes place in the beautiful town of Cefalu and bustling city of Palermo. We explored biotechnology in the conservation of cultural heritage and performed laboratory experiments and projects. We visited laboratories, historical sites, and museums and communicated with multiple guest speakers who are experts in related disciplines including the topic of development of medical devices. I also attended a conference regarding establishing a bridge program between the University of Palermo and Temple which I found to be significant for more Temple students to experience Sicilian culture and customs.

I enjoyed Sicily, the cuisine, culture, and people are amazing. It is expected to experience ups and downs while abroad, but the experience enhanced my personal growth.
