Navigating Norwich: A final reflection on my UK journey

Sitting down to pen the final pages of my UEA chapter, the flood of memories and experiences rushes forth. This study abroad journey at the University of East Anglia holds a distinct significance—it’s not just an academic sojourn; it’s a kaleidoscope of cultural immersion, personal growth, and forging connections that spanned continents. And it marks the culmination of my undergraduate study abroad experiences.

The charming, lovely streets of Norwich that I grew to love exploring.
The wonderful sight of the river that runs through the city! This was the last sight I saw of Norwich before leaving as the Norwich Station was right next to it.

As I bid adieu to UEA, I carry with me not just an academic experience, but a tapestry woven with threads of diverse cultures, lasting friendships, and personal revelations. Norwich, with its quaint streets and bustling university life, became more than a temporary abode; I truly fell in love with the city. It was a place where my Korean identity thrived alongside the new experiences of an English adventure. The beauty of cultural exchange lies in the coming together of diverse cultures, and here in Norwich, I found a home where those diverse threads converged to add vibrancy to my life.

The Norwich Market is the largest and oldest outdoor market in the UK. It had so much stuff to explore from food to vintage clothes to books to everything!
The classic fish and chips I got at Norwich Market. It was so good; I really grew to love fish and chips during my time in the UK. Who said English food is bad?
Norwich Cathedral, the largest monastic Cloister in England, was at the heart of the city. Wandering around the cathedral, I felt like I was in a Harry Potter film.
The paintings of beautiful scenic landscape of Norwich at the Norwich Museum in the famous Norwich Castle, the iconic landmark of the city. Sadly, the castle was closed for restoration during my time there, so I only got to see the museum. All the museums and cultural institutions are free for UEA students, you just need to show your ID! It was a great museum about the history and art of the city.
I got to see the countryside of the UK as I traveled to Horsey Gap to see the famous grey seals. It was the breeding season so there were a lot of the round, fluffy, adorable baby pups. It was one of the best experiences of my life—where else would I get to see seals like this? It was amazing. I loved that the city was trying their best to protect them.

Norwich, with its historic charm and eclectic offerings, became my playground for discovery beyond the university walls. The city’s heartbeat echoed through its diverse array of restaurants, each offering a culinary adventure. From authentic Korean flavors that provided a taste of home to the delightful local cafes serving traditional British dishes, every meal became a journey through culture and cuisine. The museums enriched my appreciation for art and history, enabling me to learn more about the history of the city. Beyond the city limits, the Norfolk coastline unveiled its natural wonders, including the enchanting beaches where the famous Norwich seals made their appearances. These outings were not just sightseeing endeavors but immersive experiences that wove the fabric of Norwich into the tapestry of my study abroad memories. Every corner explored, every dish savored, and every seal spotted became a chapter in my Norwich adventure, creating a mosaic of vibrant encounters and cherished moments.

My time as a conservation assistant at the Sainsbury Centre was wonderful. It was a great professional experience, especially gaining experience abroad.
The conservation lab at the Sainsbury Centre, where I worked with my supervisors. It was cool getting to experience the UK work environment.

At UEA, studying economics offered a unique academic focus, but it was my role at the renowned Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts that added an extra layer of significance. The opportunity to work in the conservation lab aligned seamlessly with my aspiration to become an art conservator. As I delved into preserving and restoring artistic treasures, the experience extended beyond borders—it became a chance to compare conservation practices between the UK and the U.S. Learning from experts and witnessing diverse approaches to art preservation was not just academically enriching but also a stepping stone toward my professional aspirations.

Archery was such a cool hobby that I got to pick up during my time at UEA. I have always wanted to try archery since I was a child, and it was lovely having that come true.
Bullseye! I hit the yellow and it made my day!

This semester became a kaleidoscope of new experiences. I ventured into territories I hadn’t imagined, from ballroom dancing to archery sessions. The thrill of aiming for the bullseye in archery mirrored the excitement of aiming for personal growth and cultural exploration in every other aspect of my life.

At the ballroom dancing competition in Manchester. I was so nervous. Everyone was so good and smooth!
The team! I stepped out of my comfort zone to experience something great with wonderful people. It was a lovely experience.

Joining the ballroom dancing team itself was a very unexpected activity for me. The pinnacle of this unexpected dance journey was stepping onto the floor of a ballroom dancing competition—an endeavor I never imagined myself undertaking. I still am in disbelief that I actually decided to enter a dance competition.

Me bonding with Kate, the horse at the UEA farm that’s close to campus. We were so sad to leave each other.

These endeavors weren’t just about trying new activities; they were about venturing far beyond my comfort zones. The abundance of societies, clubs, and various activities at UEA transformed each day into an exploration of uncharted territories. This journey wasn’t merely academic; it was a quest to discover untapped potential and passions.

My friends and I getting bubble tea and walking around Norwich. I really made some great friends during my time there.

As I turn the final page, I recognize the significance of this journey. This isn’t just the end of a chapter; it’s the closing of my undergraduate study abroad adventures. As I prepare to graduate, this final opportunity to immerse myself in a new culture, make lifelong connections, and expand my horizons was a gift—a perfect crescendo before stepping into the next chapter of my life.

The Christmas party for the Ballroom Dancing Club as we come to the end of the semester.
My last goodbye dinner with my friends as we part ways. I was so sad and am going to miss them so much.

Here’s to the friendships that know no borders, the lessons that transcend classrooms, and the journey that continues, now with Norwich forever etched in my story. This was not just my last study abroad—it was a remarkable prelude to the end of my undergraduate years. As I step into the next chapter, I hope my journey inspires others to venture into the world, whether exploring the park down the road or a country across the globe. I hope you enjoyed sharing in my adventures through these blogs. Cheers to the endless possibilities that await as I prepare to graduate! I can’t wait to take these experiences and see where it takes me in the future!

I started my first blog for UK with me preparing by watching Bridgerton. By end of this semester, I got to Bath, the city in UK where most of filming for Bridgerton was done!
This is where Daphne rode her horse to find impending duel. I call this a real full circle moment!
